Another Constituent Question
Today someone asked me if I am for the new food and beverage tax proposed by the federal government. Now I know that this is not an issue of focus in my campaign, but I thought I would answer this on the site (the person asked me to do so, lol).
Well, usually the Federal government does not interfere with areas already governed by the States (unless Constitutionally granted or by other exception), however it can pre-empt the states . Here we have (at least) one direct conflict. We, Michiganders, are used to not paying taxes on food (we also have a “return tax” on most beverages). If the Federal Gov’t decides to impose such a tax, this would directly conflict with MI law that states no tax on food. This area seems to have been historically regulated within the jurisdiction of the States, not the Fed Gov’t. Such a tax will violate several state constitutions. So long story short, I am against any new taxes on food or beverage.

Check this out!
If you haven’t already seen hulu.com you really should. It’s free tv. No cable, satelite, tv card or adaptor box. It has many series and movies for free. You need a high speed internet connection, but other than that I’m thinking about quitting cable. They add new stuff all the time, so just another way technology can benefit us all. In these tough economic times, this could be a lifesaver. (I am not advocating to quit cable yet- but I may just do that soon!
We should always look for ways to let technology make things easier (financially).
Gratiot Cruise
As I have been walking around, I have heard many people ask about the Gratiot Cruise and ask if I am for it. Even though the Treasurer cannot directly affect the decision to allow the cruise, I am most definitely for it. I see no reason for the “Cruise” to not include Roseville. It only punishes the businesses, who not only lose out on the increased sales (often they shut down for the day with no business), but also the taxpayers- whose taxes would be lessened if “Cruise” dollars (sales tax) could give the city another source of revenue. Also, a Detroit to Mt. Clemens Gratiot Cruise would be something that tourists would attract to and give Roseville something new to be proud of, as the heart of the Cruise.
Since I’m on the subject of Gratiot, I would love to see the sponsored “gardenbeds” that surrounding cities do as well (e.g.- the gardenbeds in the median on Kelly road south of 10 Mile, Eastpointe). This beautifies the city at no cost to us, just the business that sponsors the boulevard gardenbeds.
